First used by Northern Pacific Railway, the 4-8-4 steamer — which would go on to be used by numerous leading railroad companies — is most commonly referred to simply as the "Northern." Santa Fe was among the leading operators of the Northern, developing numerous different designs beginning in the 1920s.
