A six-axle diesel-electric locomotive, the SD40 was manufactured from 1966-1972. More than 1,200 were produced, though it was ultimately replaced by the wildly successful SD40-2.
This HO scale model, a replica of an SD40 operating with the Burlington Northern railroad, is equipped for DCC & Sound and features an onboard DCC decoder with SoundTraxx Tsunami decoder, a finely cast body, a BN-style plow, separately applied wire grab irons and air tanks, fine scale handrails, bi-directional lighting, a twin sealed-beam headlight with anti-glare shield, sliding cab windows, a see-through dynamic brake and radiator fans, a curved radiator fan grab iron, an exhaust stack, a frame-mounted bell, a 4000-gallon fuel tank, a five-pole motor with flywheels, magnetically operated knuckle couplers, and RP25 metal wheels with added weight for smooth operation. Minimum radius of 18". Measures approximately 9" long.
